Se inició con un par de baratillos instalados por S.S. Kresge y un socio en 1897. Al principio, Kresge's restringió el precio de sus mercancías a un máximo de diez centavos, pero finalmente a un máximo de un dólar. En 1962, Kresge's ingresó al mercado minorista con descuento en gran escala al construir el primer local Kmart en las afueras de Detroit, Mich. Debido a su éxito, la empresa inició un agresivo plan de expansión y construyó un promedio de 85 tiendas de descuento al año durante las dos décadas siguientes. En 1977 se convirtió en el segundo establecimiento minorista más grande de EE.UU. Sin embargo, en 2002 se declaró en quiebra después de años de competencia con el establecimiento minorista más grande del mundo, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (ver Sam Walton), y otras tiendas de descuento.
